Our Lady of Guadalupe,
pray for us!
The Blessed Virgin appeared to a humble Mexican Indian in 1531. The story of her apparition and the miracle of her image on Juan Diego’s tilma is well-known.
For those of you unfamiliar with the story, let me point you to one of the best sites on the web for information. At this site, Sancta.org, you will discover the beauty and mystery of the story and image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Some of the great information offered there includes:
- an English translation of the story of the apparitions
- a very interesting suppositon about why the name Guadalupe
- the truly mysterious eyes of the Blessed Virgin on the image
- there are picture galleries, prayers, related on-line videos,
- and much, much more
If you want to learn more about Our Lady of Guadalupe, Sancta.org is the best place to start.
I’d also like to direct you to a very interesting paper about the constellations on the robe of Our Lady. WARNING: the paper is contained in a PDF file; so you’ll need Adobe Acrobat in order to open it. (There is an HTML version, but I don’t recommend it because it lacks the images.)
In a final note, I’d like to point out that there is a link between the Battle of Lepanto – one of the most important battles in the history of the world – and Our Lady of Guadalupe. One of the commanders for the Catholic forces, Andrea Doria, carried into battle with him a small copy of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Sacred Heart of Jesus … have mercy on us.
Our Lady of Guadalupe … pray for us.
