Pregnancy = Slavery

President Obama has nominated Dawn Johnsen to head the Office of Legal Counsel in the Department of Justice.

Let me briefly explain what exactly the Office of Legal Counsel does.  From the official Dept. of Justice website:

…the Office of Legal Counsel provides authoritative legal advice to the President and all the Executive Branch agencies. … The Office also is responsible for providing legal advice to the [President and the] Executive Branch on all constitutional questions and reviewing pending legislation for constitutionality.

In other words, Dawn Johnsen will be directly giving Pres. Obama legal advice.

Why is this important?  Why is this appearing on the VPCYG webblog?

Because, Dawn Johnsen has written and argued in legal briefs that pregnancy can be equated to involuntary servitude, according to the National Review Online.

(Read the original article and the follow-up.  But also be sure to read Andrew McCarthy’s short post on the NRO blog, The Corner.)

Part of Mrs. Johnsen’s argument against any diminishing of access (including funding) to abortion is that it “requires a woman to provide continuous physical service to the fetus in order to further the state’s asserted interest [in the life of the unborn].”   She draws a comparison to slavery by attaching her argument to the 13th Amendment, which forbids “involuntary servitude” or slavery.

The radical Mrs. Johnsen also opposes:

  • 24-hour waiting periods for abortions
  • parental-consent requirements for minors
  • laws against partial-birth abortions

This a person who must be opposed.  We cannot sit idly be and allow her to be confirmed.  Everyone who believes in the sanctity of life must become active on this cause.  Whether or not a person voted for candidate Barack Obama, this particular policy of abortion-on-demand MUST be opposed.

What can you do?

You can begin by contacting your US Senator and tell him/her to oppose Dawn Johnsen’s nomination.  In Louisiana, your US Senators are David Vitter (pro-life) and Mary Landrieu (pro-abortion).

Contact members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, whose job it is to make a recommendation to the full Senate about Mrs. Johnsen.

You can also contact the White House to tell Pres. Obama that Dawn Johnsen does not represent your views about abortion.  Pres. Obama is the public servant; he was elected to do the will of the public – not his own will.  Make sure that Pres. Obama understands that we, whom he serves, do not support him in his abortion agenda.

Contact your US Representative.  Although they cannot vote to confirm any of the President’s nominations, they certainly are part of the political process.  In Ville Platte, our Congressman is Rep. Charles Boustany.

Contact your governor.  Governors cannot vote to confirm, but they are part of the political process.  In Louisiana, he is Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Finally, but importantly:  Pray and fast.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.

St. Joseph, Guardian of the Infant Jesus, pray for us.
