Horton Hears a Who

In what is one of the absolute coolest film reviews I’ve read in a long time, Steven D. Greydanus (of Decent Films) gives some VERY GOOD RATINGS for Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who movie.

SDG gave HHaW the following ratings:

• Overall: A-
• Artistic/Entertainment: 3.5 stars (out of 4)
• Moral/Spiritual Value: +2 (on a scale of -4 / +4)

The cool thing about SDG’s review is that it’s done entirely in Seussian rhyme!  Here’s a sample:

Meanwhile, in Who-ville, life’s full of song.
Everyone’s cheerful and nothing goes wrong.
There are 96 girls in the Mayor’s happy brood
But Jo-jo, the boy, seems rather subdued.

With hair in his eyes and a sad little frown
He’s the first sulky kid ever born in that town.
But the Mayor, meanwhile, has got his own trouble:
Only he knows or cares what’s outside the Who-bubble.

The kidding is gentle, touched with affection
And no mean-spiritedness or rejection.
Like Horton, the film doesn’t hold any grudges.
In the end, no one’s judged and nobody judges.

But the message that comes through the clearest of all
Is: A person’s a person, no matter how small.
And it should be, it should be, it SHOULD be that way!
Horton’s own faithfulness carries the day!

For those of you not familiar with the plot of Horton Hears a Who, it’s about an elephant who is made aware of an entire world of people living on a speck of dust.  Horton makes it his life’s mission to protect the little Who’s from disaster.  Because – as the catch-phrase goes – A person’s a person, no matter how small!

The pro-life message of HHaW is unmistakable.  And, for those who may not know, there’s actually another book with Horton – Horton Hatches an Egg, which is very pro-life too.

SDG has also done a Seussical review for How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Cat in the Hat .  Plus, he’s done a review for Scooby Doo that you can sing to the tune of the Scooby Doo theme song (you’ve got to check this one out).
